Engineers Share Their Career Journey with 8th Graders

As part of a partnership with CU's Experiential Science Education Research Collaborative (Xsci), Timberline teachers have collaborated with local STEM professionals to develop projects for middle schoolers. 8th graders at Timberline PK-8 are working on a career exploration project. Monthly guest speakers who work in STEM-related fields come to school to talk about different career opportunities and the multiple pathways to attain them. Several of the guests have opted to return on other days to help students work on their projects.

Industry and Education Partnerships

Partnerships between Industry and Education are providing schools with some fantastic opportunities for student learning.  As part of a $20,000 grant, some SVVSD schools, including Alpine Elementary, are partnering with Bitsbox to explore coding in JavaScript in the classroom.  Bitsbox is a website where kids can learn computer programming.  They build apps on the site and can load them to their mobile device.  Why code, and why use JavaScript?  Here’s what Bitsbox has to say:

CU-Boulder GK-12 Fellow Inspires Skyline Students with Research

Brian Straight, one of Skyline's GK-12 fellows, taught students about what is currently going on in the world of robotics.  Not only did he touch on biomedical engineering, humanoid robots, drones, and robots in space, he also taught the sophomores about his own personal research.  Students learned how he analyzed forces exerted on a person in a wheelchair as they were being pushed in an effort to create a more supportive chair in the future during his time as a mechanical engineering graduate student.  Students also got to learn about another project that Brian has work
