October Design Challenge--Empathy

On the October late start day, students throughout Longmont Estates worked with their "buddy" classrooms on a design challenge focused on empathy. Buddy classrooms are paired at least two grade levels apart and get together once a month for design challenges. Prior to the challenge, classroom teachers incorporated literacy by reading books and scenarios about what empathy means, and how we might show it for others. Then, students were paired in groups consisting of younger and older students who worked together to brainstorm solutions to a scenario where empathy was lacking. Next, the groups came up with a prototype to demonstrate how they could show empathy to others. Finally, groups were able to present their ideas to the whole class. For homework, students were asked to share with their families what they learned about empathy by going through the challenge.
