Lights and Lasers!

This week, students in grades 3-5 were invited to attend a late start event with CU Discovery at Longmont Estates.  The Light and Laser workshop allowed students to have a hands-on experience with light and how we perceive it.  They were first given diffraction gratings to allow them to see different colors of light from various lamps, including to view the color produced when neon gas has electricity running through it.  Then, with a partner, they used laser levels to reflect the light off a series of mirrors, with the goal of hitting a pre-marked target.  Safety was a topic as well, and students learned positives and negatives of lasers.  Finally, the presenter demonstrated the power of lasers by using green and red lasers to pop balloons of the opposite color.  Everyone who attended gave the program a thumbs up!
