Hello and welcome back to Alpine. As we start a new school year, we have some exciting changes! I would like to extend our best wishes to Mr. Reitzig, Alpine's STEM Coordinator during the 2013-2014 School Year. As Alpine’s first STEM Coordinator, he got us off to a fantastic start. His expertise in robotics has earned him a new position working for the Innovation Center. There, he can work with all the STEM Elementary schools to institute robotics programs into their curriculum. He also has the opportunity to teach at the high school level, shaping student leaders and mentors who will help support us at Alpine with our Robotics Program!
You may have seen on our home page a little information about me- I’m Kristen Brohm and the new STEM Coordinator here at Alpine. Check out my bio to learn more about my background and see my connection to the Alpine Community.
At Alpine, we have some exciting things in the works. We will host many extra-curricular activities this year that focus on IB and STEM integration. We are offering competitive and noncompetitive VEX robotics clubs, classes in Cubelets, Simple Machines and Construction & Design, and coding classes for all ages. Check out your Thursday Folder for information coming home throughout the month of September.
STEM is also an important component of our IB Focus. It’s more than just some cool after-school classes, it’s a way to help guide our learning to be relevant, authentic and purposeful. The thinking processes, content knowledge and skills we learn through STEM practices enhance our IB mission, vision and goals. STEM and IB will come together this year in the classroom, encouraging students to think globally, act locally, collaborate with peers and become critical thinkers who take action and solve problems that are important to them and others around them. Here’s to an exciting year!
