STEM Enrichment Activities

At Alpine, we offer all kinds of STEM Enrichment Opportunities for students of all ages. Currently, we have classes running for all grades K-5 and our preschool classes will start up this winter. Our classes are offered at no cost to families, with the exception of one of our robotics classes. Check out all that we have to offer before and after school!

Scratch and Scratch Jr:  In this Computer Coding class, children learn to solve problems and design projects, and they develop sequencing skills that are foundational for later academic success.  They also use math and language in a meaningful and motivating context, supporting the development of early-childhood numeracy and literacy.  With ScratchJr., children aren't just learning how to code, they are coding to learn.

Kinder Coding:  In this Kindergarten class, students will play and learn with coding apps and programs. Students will learn to solve problems, design projects, and develop sequencing skills that are foundational for later academic success. They will use math and language in a meaningful and motivating context, supporting the development of early-childhood numeracy and literacy. In this class, children aren't just learning how to code, they are coding to learn.

Math through the Arts:  In this transdisciplinary class, children will create art using their knowledge of a variety of math concepts.  This class provides an opportunity for students to develop critical thinking skills within a new and creative venue, and students can carry new concepts over into the classroom.

Chemical Engineering: This Engineering class will introduce our young engineers to solids, liquids, and solutions.  Students K-2 will explore several crazy concoctions and make their own samples of bubbles, play dough, gak, and more.

Stop Motion:  Have you ever wondered how movies like "Wallace and Gromit" and the "Lego Movie" are made?  In this class you will use IPads and Stop Motion software to create your own movies.  We will use different types of media (paper, clay, Lego's, etc...) to create props and settings, and learn how to use this application to create presentations for fun and school! At the end of this class we will have a "Film Festival" and share all our hard work with our family and friends!

Enginnering Exploration:  In this Kindergarten-First Grade Class, students will use Legos, K’NEX, Keva Planks and much, much more, to explore the design process for building structures. Use your creativity, collaboration and critical thinking skills, and your ability to communicate with others to design structures to stand tall under all types of pressure!

Civil and Structural Engineering:  Build with Legos, K’Nex, Keva Planks, and Tinker Toys as we explore how buildings are built to withstand natural disasters and wild weather. Use your creativity, collaborating and critical thinking skills, and your ability to communicate with others to design a bridge to withstand heavy winds, make earthquake-proof homes, design structures to stand tall under heavy pressure, and build skyscrapers that won’t fall over!

Vex Robotics Competitive Club:  Know you love robots and can’t wait to play?  Vex Competition is the club for you!  Create a robot with your team, design and re-iterate it to be the best robot you can make.  This year’s challenge is new and will test your critical thinking skills and imagination.  Competitions begin in district and winning teams move onto to state and world championships.

Media Club:  In this action packed FIFTH GRADE ONLY Class, Alpine students will create media and marketing for the Alpine Community.   Students will: Create digital bi-monthly school announcements, Create presentations about Alpine Events and Programs to share with the community, Develop digital citizenship skills, Learn to use different digital presentation tools and technology including imovie, iphoto, powerpoint/keynote/google presentations, digital cameras, video recording and editing, green screens and more, Develop interviewing, presentation, public speaking and writing skills, Develop empathy for the needs of the school community and be able to effectively report out on those needs, Demonstrate the attributes of the IB Learner Profile.  Students will learn and develop all necessary skills during the club- no additional tech skills needed!  Come be a risk-taker and have lots of fun!
