STEM At Alpine Elementary IB-STEM World School

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, and provides students with an engaging, rigorous and real-world education.  It is integrated and interdisciplinary, and uses inquiry-based learning to challenge students and connect them with their world in meaningful ways.    IB and STEM naturally overlap.  The profile for an IB student is nearly identical to that of a STEM student.  Alpine will be enhancing its IB programming through STEM, principally through the use of design thinking.  We look forward to providing our students with an optimal 21st century education through both IB and STEM!! Design thinking is central to STEM education in the St. Vrain Valley School District.  It provides students with the means to be creative problem-solvers.  Our design-thinking model is human-centered, which means that the process is not focused on the object or product being designed, but rather on the needs and interests of the end-user.  Design thinking also puts students in the drivers seat of their learning.  It enables them to identify important and relevant problems and challenges in their world as well as to innovate and implement solutions to these.  As a result, they become active participants rather than passive consumers.  They also learn to apply and create knowledge. Please enjoy this short video that highlights how Alpine has begun to integrate STEM and design thinking into its IB program!
