Second Grade SeeSaws

Second graders in Mrs. Marshall’s class are working on the Balance and Motion unit. Their current focus is on Physical Science standard 1.1: Changes in speed or direction of motion are caused by forces such as pushes and pulls. Specifically, they were given the challenge of “How might we balance a seesaw with objects of different weights?” Through the Design Thinking process, students brainstormed ideas in their science notebooks, then modeled seesaws with partners. Some students were challenged by the idea that it would be “too hard”, but Mrs. Marshall encouraged her students to have a growth mindset when it came to the hard work.
