In this unit of study, students identified what animals need to survive, and what happens when they do not have what they need. They learned that living things depend on the health of their habitats and inquired into how and why habitats become unhealthy. Students were presented with the following dilemma: over time, the animal you have researched has lost its natural habitat and must adapt to a new environment. Design new adaptations your animal had to make in order to survive in this new environment. Students developed empathy for the research animal by answering these inquiry questions: How do living things depend on their environment? How does an organism respond when basic needs are not met? Students worked hard to design ways for their animal to survive in its new habitat. This process helped them realize that our responsibility to maintain natural habitats is extremely important to the health of our planet.
