Prime Number Party

Stem School

To explore how prime and composite numbers affect us in our everyday lives, students in 4th grade at Northridge Elementary took on an interesting design challenge.  They were given a scenario in which they had to plan for a party.  One hundred of their friends and family memebers were attending, and students had to arrange seating so that there were the same number of guests sitting at each table.  After students worked together to come up with various solutions, a NEW problem was introduced--they forgot to invite their favorite uncle!  Now they had 101 guests to distribute evenly!  Students struggled with the new challenge and developed a deeper understanding of--and appreciation for--prime numbers.
