Physics Class Designs a Method to Separate a Mixture

In 8th grade science class, students were given a mixture of sand, sugar, copper, and iron filings and asked to design a way to separate all four elements. Groups had to create a list of everything they thought they would need from tools to materials and a plan for how each would be used. Once the supply list and plan were final, their teacher gathered the requested materials and students got to work testing and reiterating their separation process. Sugar turned out to be the most difficult ingredient to separate, especially since most of the references students consulted referred to salt.
