Fifth Grade Design Challenge: Trimester 2

Humans body systems don’t always function correctly. Students were asked to design an adaptation to support an issue or problem with a body system.  Within this unit of study, students met the science standard, all organisms have structures and systems with separate functions.  Students did experiments, created models, met with professionals, went on field trips and researched information about body systems including the respiratory, circulatory, digestive, skeletal, muscular, and nervous systems.  Students were required to work in collaborative groups and encountered both successes and frustrations they had to overcome.  Students were engaged in the learning and challenged themselves on many levels.  They used 21st Century skills, and integrated their learning in a way that was relevant and meaningful to them.  These fifth graders walked away from this project with a great sense of accomplishment and pride.
