Engineering Week with Alpine 1st Graders

Stem School

First Graders became MATERIALS and ARCHITECTURAL Engineers during Engineering Week at Alpine. Materials Engineers turn plastics, glass, metals and other substances into new composite materials with stronger, more powerful qualities. Architectural Engineers design how to assemble materials to create awe-inspiring structures. They also produce buildings that use energy and water more efficiently, creating less waste and pollution. As first graders learn about 2D and 3D objects, understanding how those objects relate to each other can be tricky. Students used the 3Doodler, a 3D printing pen, to turn two-dimensional shapes into three-dimensional ones, solidifying their understanding of the connection between the two. Next, they synthesized their knowledge of 2-D and 3-D shapes to design structures in their classroom. Their knowledge of 2-D shapes helped to create stable basis, and their knowledge of how shapes work together created some pretty strong structures.
