Day 07 - Smarter Commerce (Middle School)

We started the day with the Balloon Challenge. Teams have to launch a balloon with only the following materials: 1 balloon, 2 paper clips, 2 rubber bands, 2 pencils, and 2 pieces of paper. The balloons need to be launched, not carried or thrown. Teams had two rounds to make their balloons fly the farthest. The winning team won with a 6 feet distance – and all groups used the slingshot method – interesting!

Next, we revisited the design process and talked about how to get to the ideate stage. Many groups are struggling with getting their ideas off the ground and it was time to go back to the drawing board – literally.  I believe it worked. After break, the kids had a much clearer idea of what they needed to produce. The ideas became reality as prototypes started to become actual products. The kids have a lot of work ahead of them still: designing company logos, slogans and mission statements. Their prototype must be a masterful example of a marketable product. Kids must show how they followed all the aspects of the design process (empathize, define, etc.). And what separates Smarter Commerce from the other groups is the need for an advertising campaign. Kids must SELL their ideas and products!
