Day 03 - Smarter Buildings (Elementary)

Today’s design challenge was a favorite so far.

Group 1

We started our day with a guest speaker, Pete Weber, who is an architect in Boulder.  He showed us his process and all of the different types of drawings he makes when he designs a house for someone.  He had great information and answered our questions about how to make buildings more energy efficient, like redesigning windows, using insulation, and having light sensors.

Next, we expanded on something the architect talked about called “scale”.  He used a scale of 1/8 inch = 1 foot in his example, so together we measured our classroom length and width and then drew a rectangle representing our room on graph paper with that scale.  Then each individual got to try it with a scale of 1/4 inch = 1 foot.  It was challenging!

Finally, we got to our favorite part:  designing a place for kids to have a party, celebration, or hangout.  We made everything from a rainbow balloon land to a carnival water park to a sports den.  Maybe someday one of us will be an architect and some of these creative designs will become a reality.
