Day 02 - Smarter Water (Elementary)

We had an amazing and busy day learning, exploring, and building. We kicked off our day with a discussion around proper hydration. We estimated and measured how much a sip of water weighs, as well as a cup of water, and a bottle of water. We discovered that a sip of water is roughly 3 ounces of water and a nalgene bottle weighs 3 pounds 3 ounces. We then researched how much water people need to drink in order to stay hydrated. The general rule we found was that people need to drink eight eight ounce cups of water per day. We then discussed that the more you exercise the more you need to drink. So we decided that we needed to design a way to encourage people to drink more water. We ran out of time to finish the project so we will finish this next week at Skyline.

We took two field trips at IBM. Our first trip was outside to see the water treatment facilities. The water that IBM uses comes from snow melt. They treat the water onsite and fill giant water towers that will last two days and cool down two of the six of the computer centers for two days. Now that’s a lot of water?

Our second trip was to IBM’s command center. We were able to see where IBM holds some very important meetings with government officials, business leaders around the world and past and present governors of Colorado. The students were thrilled to see the opaque windows turn transparent and reveal a hundred monitors with over twenty employees monitoring accounts from businesses around the world.
