Basketball Math

Students in Ms. Cook’s Algebra 1 classes are in for a treat.  They are learning about quadratics by analyzing a basketball throw. Students are trying to determine if the average freshman is capable of hitting a half court shot. By using Vernier’s Video Physics app, students are able to capture video of each other throwing a basketball as far as they can. Using the app they can collect data and graphically analyze their shot (x & y position vs. time, x & y velocity vs. time). By compiling their data with their classmates, they will be able to figure out if, in fact, a freshman is capable of making a half court shot.

This project is being made possible by a Race To The Top grant from the Department of Education.
