6th Graders Design Wind Turbines

As part of their natural resources unit, students have researched the latest technology and designs being used to harness wind energy. After the research, students were given a variety of materials and open inquiry time to design a wind turbine capable of picking up a cup of pennies. Groups tested their wind turbine by using a fan and adding one penny at a time. They used the feedback from each test to reiterate the design and retest until they were satisfied with their wind turbine's functionality. The team that could pick up the most pennies in the cup won a prize. Alicia, a 6th grader in Mr. Salz's science class, said, "I liked working on a team. We got to pick our own name. It was exciting because there was a tie.".
