6th Grade Math: Using Data for Design Thinking

During their math unit on graphing and data analysis, sixth graders surveyed other sixth graders to find out what their biggest problem was when transitioning from the elementary level to the middle school level.  They collected, organized, graphed, and analyzed data to discover the answer.  The top problems turned out to be trouble opening lockers and behavior in the hallways during passing periods.  Now that the empathy phase of the design process was complete, student groups set to work ideating and prototyping solutions to the problems.  Prototypes were displayed in the school library for fifth graders to study and give feedback on since they will be the next group making the transition from elementary to middle school.
