5th Grade Designers

Fifth grade students in Mrs. Goldsberry, Ms. Burnham, and Mr. Howard’s classes were able to use what they learned about tornadoes last week to create tornado-proof structures. In each class, the students learned about tornadoes in math as they graphed different levels of tornadoes on the Fujita-Pearson scale. In reading, they used a non-fiction story in Scholastic StoryWorks to close read about tornadoes. For social studies, they viewed a short video about the tornadoes that struck Joplin, MO. With all of their knowledge, students then formed design firms to collaborate on “How might we create a tornado-proof structure?” They went through the Design Thinking process, and the final models were both creative and innovative.
